What is a herniated disc?
There is a disc between almost every vertebrae in the spine. These discs act as shock absorbers and provide flexibility in the back. When the materials inside the disc begin to push out due to a tear in the disc, this is known as a herniated or slipped disc. A herniated disc is often the result of how we use our body and the daily wear-and-tear on the spine, but certain factors like age, weight, genetics, and your occupation can increase your risk for a herniated disc.
What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?
The main symptoms of a herniated disc are:
- Pain in your arm or leg
- Numbness or tingling
- Weakness
Even though the herniated disk is in your back, the pain is usually most intense in the buttocks, thigh and calf if the slipped disc is in your lower back. If it’s in your neck, the pain will be present in your arm and shoulder. You may experience it as a shooting pain when you cough, sneeze, or move in certain ways.
