Yoga Q & A

What is yoga?

Yoga is a form of practice that combines physical, mental and spiritual activity that moves the practitioner through a series of specific poses (Asana). It is also meant to be a form of meditation and/or part of a meditation practice, and places an emphasis on uniting the body, mind, and soul through the practice of Asana with the breath. Although yoga has become quite popular in recent years for fitness, at its core yoga shares many similar goals as chiropractic care, keeping the body in alignment and energy grounded in order to create and maintain balance.

Yoga postures are often complex and can be hard on the spine, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and joints if not performed correctly. Therefore, it is important to practice yoga asana with an understanding of our body, especially our spine and alignment. Dr. Miok is a 200RYT certified yoga teacher who incorporates yogic poses and techniques into her patient care to best serve their needs.

Is yoga right for me?

If you’re seeking chiropractic care to get relief from pain and to find a long-term solution to keep your body in balance, then incorporating yoga into your routine may serve both purposes. Dr. Miok is skilled at suggesting yoga poses that are beneficial to her patients as part of their treatment plan.

Whether you’re experienced with yoga or you have never attempted a yoga pose in your life, Dr. Miok will work with you to build yoga into your treatment to boost flexibility, relieve pain, improve your stability, and holistically maintain your health. Yoga is a practice that you can also work on in your own time but when guidance is needed, Dr. Miok will be available to help.

What type of yoga do you offer?

At Loudoun Ideal Chiropractic, yoga is customized at the individual level. Based on your current status, needs, and goals, Dr. Miok chooses the yoga poses (Asana) that are best for you. She also incorporates Pilates exercise concepts to help build strength and flexibility, and seamlessly integrates meditation and breathing techniques into your care.

In combination with Yoga and Pilate, Dr. Miok also uses SFMA I and II, or Selective Functional Movement Assessment protocol, to understand and diagnose the movement pattern and to open the body.
