Whiplash Q & A

What is whiplash?

It may come as little surprise that your body, neck, and spine can be thrown out of alignment as the result of an automobile accident. Whiplash is a neck injury that is caused by the sudden and forceful back-and-forth motion that often occurs during an auto accident. But whiplash can also happen as a result of sports or other impact injuries. Inside the neck, your muscles and ligaments experience stretching or tearing as a result of whiplash. Your entire spine can move out of alignment from whiplash as well.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Things happen so fast during a car accident, that you might not even remember the moment that the whiplash occurred. You may have whiplash if you’re experiencing symptoms like:

  • Neck pain and stiffness: Especially if it is worse with movement
  • Restricted movement: Less range of motion than you had before the accident
  • Headaches
  • Pain or stiffness in the shoulders, upper back, or arms
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Trouble sleeping, concentrating, or remembering
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Irritability or depression since the accident

How is whiplash treated?

Whiplash can be successfully treated with chiropractic care. Dr. Miok is also able to suggest other treatments as well to help with the symptoms of whiplash — such as massage therapy to heal scar tissue and adhesion, and certain Yoga poses to restore the lost range of motion.
